It's a lot different now. Atleast at YRDSB, you goto a gifted program which are at a few schools and you goto classes with other gifted kids all the time. You aren't just pulled out from your regular class for a few periods. You probably don't need this info anymore, but maybe it will help someone else.

At your child's age, French immersion is probably the better option, since she would be more challenged academically (learning material + learning French). The school should ask you to sign some paperwork that would allow the gifted designation to remain in your child's records, so that if you decide later on that you want to put her in gifted, the option would still be available. At the younger stages, learning a second language trumps the gifted program, where they may just be doing minor supplementary material (depending on the program/school).
